PROJECT
Designed in conjunction with the New York Public Library exhibition of the same name, A Secret Location on the Lower East Side: Adventures in Writing, 1960–1980, documents a time of intense literary exploration. The book and show focused on the New American Poetry movement, including the strains of Beat, Black Mountain, New York School, San Francisco Renaissance, and others. This avant-garde movement helped birth a multitude of radical literary and visual magazines and publications. The book focuses on the small underground presses in San Francisco and New York City, many of which were publishing via mimeograph machine or letterpress. This “Mimeo Revolution” helped buoy such writers as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Carlos Williams, Robert Creeley, Anne Waldman, Vito Acconci, and Diane DiPrima, among hundreds of others. The work of prominent artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Philip Guston, and Cy Twombly also appeared in the publications.
